What to Wear to the Henley Regatta

Henley Royal Regatta is an extra special annual rowing event first established in 1839, and a significant calendar moment to enjoy in amongst key British summer festivities. Hosted on the River Thames, the 2023 regatta lasts for six days, with races and hospitality happening around the picturesque town of Henley-On-Thames. With this elegant occasion offering a seasonal style opportunity, there’s a clear dress code which helps shape outfit shopping.

For ladies attending the highly esteemed Henley Regatta, dresses or skirts must have a hemline which hangs below the knee. Alternatively, jackets or blazers can be worn with trousers, or a full trouser suit. It’s not strictly essential to wear hats- although- headwear Is always a popular theme.

Keeping all this in mind, I’ve put together a few outfit suggestions, spanning across understated glamour, showstopping prints and on-trend fashion picks.

Dresses

Mixed Lace And Embroidered Woven Halter Maxi Dress

Embrace classic monochrome magic with this halter dress showcasing an eye-catching cut-out back. The delicate black lace detailing and woven floral features add a chic finish, for those who favour timeless style. Pair with gold sandals and matching metallic jewellery to bring a little bling, alongside a statement black hat. If you fancy incorporating a pop of colour, choose a vibrant nail shade.

The British social season goes hand in hand with floral centrepieces, which is why I’m drawn towards this blooming gorgeous dress. This colourful, flowing piece is perfect for riverside photo opportunities. As a huge fan of a swishy skirt, I’d elevate the look further by adding a bold lip, summer stilettos, and a straw handbag.

Florals are having a style moment, and this piece also has a luxurious guipure lace twist, as well as bringing a summer mood with the pastel colourway. I adore the flattering shape, particularly the pleated skirt. Add in a citrus-coloured block heel for an extra splash of sunshine.

If you favour a bright block of colour over patterns, this bold pink dress has a relaxed fit and A-line skirt. The sleeveless high neck style creates minimalist simplicity, and a softly tailored feel serving up effortless elegance. Accessorize the bright piece with stacked heels or wedges, and chunky gold jewellery to tick contrasting texture boxes too.

Jumpsuits

Dial up the style smartness courtesy of this sleeveless wrap jumpsuit. Emulating a tailored suit look with a simple one-piece shape and long tie belt detail, the radiant orange is a show stopping tangerine shade. The streamlined fit gets my vote as a staple summer outfit, to team with platform sandals and a headband fascinator for extra impact.

Tuxedo Wrap Sleeveless Jumpsuit

As far as sharp trends go, a tuxedo style is a failsafe fashion pick. Extra panache points go to the flattering cinched waist, which would be perfectly finished with pointed court shoes. The fresh white summer shade creates a crisp silhouette, calling out for an alfresco cocktail or a glass of Pimm’s.

The 1970s are an undisputed iconic clothing era, conjuring up images of flares and power suits. Step forward this modern homage, complete with flared angel sleeves for a flattering arm fit, and a luxurious satin sheen. Its neckline invites statement jewellery, and I’m picturing several layered chain necklaces plus matching hoop earrings, finished off with a pair of sling-back shoes.

Tailoring

For soft, relaxed tailoring combined with summer pastels, this wide-leg trouser suit has an air of on-trend androgynous appeal. The double-breasted jacket is beautifully poised for shoulder robing and could be worn over a corset top to add a structured contrast. The flap pockets offer practicality, while on the footwear front, gold chain loafers would mirror the metallic button details perfectly.

Meanwhile, the floor length trousers finish the look with a flowing feel, all set for hazy summer days. Although, it’s the thick notched waistband which instantly won me over. Just add a skinny belt and a Breton top for off-duty Riviera days.

Fascinators

Fascinators offer fun, frivolity and fanciness with a wide variety of finishes, should you prefer details such as feathers, flowers, lace or bows. A way of incorporating headwear without committing to full hat coverage, popular millinery nods include pillbox, disc and veil designs. The easiest option is a headband fascinator, which sits neatly over any hairstyle, worn up or down.
