Brita Fernandez Schmidt: Find Your Voice

Women For Women International UK's Executive Director, Brita Fernandez Schmidt, has worked tirelessly to empower female war survivors. She talks to The Step Up Club about authenticity, values and the importance of finding your voice.

Brita’s Five Tips for Finding Your Voice

Be true to yourself

Success for me is when I know I’ve not succumbed to expectations, norms or my ego. When I go to bed I think about what I did that I liked that day and why. When I reflect, it’s always the moments when I am true to myself and to my values.

Have a motto

Mine is, ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. It’s about finding your own way, celebrating and loving yourself.

Feel the sisterhood

We don’t do this enough: really help each other and pool our power.

Empower yourself, support each other

The beliefs our society has given to women don’t necessarily serve or fulfill us. We should surround ourselves with people who affirm our desires and potential.

Let your voice roar

Finding your voice can only come from a place of authenticity. It’s a process of getting to know who you are and making sense of yourself.
