Following the interest generated from our made-to-measure Atelier in Selfridges last autumn, we are launching a pop-up dedicated to our most iconic item: the leather jacket. This is an exclusive opportunity to be one of very few to own a personalised one-of-a-kind investment piece and at the same time catch a glimpse into the world of our design studio. Our dedicated in-house atelier in Shoreditch lies at the heart of the brand where the design team create every item in the collection. The craft behind our designs allows us to engineer this exceptional level of quality into every piece and we wanted to bring it to life for others to experience.
As part of our Leather Atelier, I had the opportunity to personalise my own leather jacket as a one-off piece (as seen in the photo above), which will be available to purchase as part of the pop-up. I was thinking about the sportswear and fabric mixing trends that are so strong for spring summer ‘14 and that will continue to feature in our autumn winter ‘14 collection. I decided to customise our bomber style jacket and mixed a black leather body with snake texture leather sleeves and trimmed with matte black zips. I wanted to create a relaxed understated feel and an ultimately, a versatile leather jacket.
The construction of our leather jacket is a fine art. Each jacket is designed in our studio and each piece – there can be up to 50 – is individually pattern cut and toiled in our atelier; it can take up to 4 versions to get it right. We source high quality, supple leather skins and work closely with tanneries in Italy. All our leather skins are drum-dyed to ensure the colour is penetrated evenly, with the final leather skins hand cut using a small scalpel for the utmost precision. Once each piece is cut, the jacket is then assembled by highly-skilled machinists and trimmed with hand-polished zips sourced from Switzerland.
A leather jacket is one of the most wearable items you can add to your wardrobe. They are investment pieces and I constantly revisit my leather jackets regardless of the season. My favourite styles from my collection of Karen Millen leather jackets include 2 black leather bombers, our signature biker jacket coloured in both a muted pastel pink and black, and our punk-inspired gilet from autumn winter ’13.
